 Walk to Stavely

Stavely mill yard

Great walk from Laurel cottage to Stavely mill yard and enjoy a visit to the Hawkshead brewery. 

 

Laurel Cottage to Brantfell and Bowness
Time:Approx 1hr to Brant Fell
Distance:Approx 3 miles

I. Turn right out of Laurel cottage, walk up Park road passing the Post office on the left. Continue up the hill past Lickbarrow road. The road then bends to the right.
II. On the bend there is a path that runs behind the bungalows. Take the path. You will pass a sign on the left marked ?Bowness?. Follow the track which turns right and after 50yards then bends to the left, go through the gap in the wall. (don?t go straight on here)
III. At the other end of this path there is a gate into a farm drive. Go through the gate straight ahead and through the next gate into the field.
IV. There is a stone wall on your right ,head for the corner there is a yellow marker, from there head for the gate at the far end of the field, there is a large fir to the right of it. Go through the gate.
V. Follow the yellow marker heading for the gate in the wall continue through this to the next gate. (Both the gates are 5 bar with kissing gates, the gates could be open)
VI. Into the field, head straight over , there is a farm in the right hand corner. To the gate in the corner of the filed marked ?Dales way?
VII. Continue along this path passing a large farm on the left to the next gate. Go through the gate.
Option 1
· Continue along the path to the next gate and drop directly into Bowness.
Option 2
· Take the steps on the left to continue to Brant fell.
VIII. Take the steps and follow the track up the hill following the yellow marker through the wood on the left. Follow the track to a stone wall, go over the wall turn left and Brant Fell is in front of you. Climb to the top and enjoy the views.
IX. When descending Brant Fell head for the wall again but don't go over. Instead continue along the path keeping the wall on your right and over the stile. At the bottom the path bends to the left, go over the wall and follow the path, this is ?Post Knott view point.
X. Re join the path and go down a dip and through the gate into the wood, follow the path to the left. You will come to a crossroads in the path. Turn left into Bowness or turn right which will take you back to the steps at the gate at point viii.

Laurel Cottage to Orrest Head
Time:Approx 2.5 miles to Orrest Head

Turn left out Laurel cottage and walk to the junction.
Turn right onto Woodland road then immediate left onto Broad street then walk to the end of the road.
Turn right onto Crescent road then walk through the village centre until you reach the Queens Pub, follow the road to the right and walk to the top of the hill.
On the other side of the road you will see a large hotel called ?Windermere Hotel?. To the left of this there is a marked footpath leading to Orrest head view point. Take the footpath, you will immediately see a track to the left, ignore this and continue uphill. Follow the track until you reach a wall, turn right here and continue up the hill until you reach a gate. Go through the gate and climb to the summit.

Laurel Cottage to School Knott
Time:Approx 50 minutes to School Knott
Distance:Approx 3 miles

1. Turn right out of Laurel cottage, cross the road and enter the park. Cross the grass to the road at the far side of the park. There is a cricket pavilion on your left, walk past this. Upon reaching the road turn left.
2. Take the turning on the right, Fairfield road, walk to the top of the road and turn left. Walk to the hedgerow and through the gate.
3. Turn right and go through the gate.
4. Continue and you will pass a cottage on your left. Follow this road over a stream and up a slight hill (don?t take the footpath sign on your right as you pass the cottage)
5. After about 20 yards the road goes to the right you will see a five bar gate in front of you, go through the gate. Follow the track to the next gate, there is a stone bridge on the other side.
6. Continue along the track and up the hill. After 100 yards there is a track off to your left, take this and continue up the hill.
7. After half a mile you will come to a gate. Go through the gate but don?t take the track on your right. Keep the wall on your right and continue until you get to the Tarn.
8. As you reach the Tarn keep the left of it, about half way along look to your left and you will see a gate in the wall (might be a gap if the gate is left open). Go through the gate and walk to the top of School Knott and enjoy the view.
9. Go straight down the other side in the direction of the lake. Go through the stile at the bottom and continue down the hill which will bring you back to point 3 of the directions. You can retrace your steps back to Laurel Cottage.

Laurel Cottage to Watermill Inn, Ings
Time:Approx 60 minutes to Watermill Inn, Ings
Distance:Approx 3-4 miles (Please note that this walk can be muddy and boggy in places)

1. Turn right out of Laurel Cottage, and then turn into the park. Immediately cross the grass to your right going roughly towards the hill (School Knott) in the background and, in the foreground, towards the gap between the terrace houses on your right and the cricket pavilion on your left. When you reach the road beyond the park, turn left.
2. Turn right up Fairfield road, walk to the top of the road and turn left. Walk to the hedgerow and go through the gate.
3. Walk to the hedgerow and go through the gate.
4. Now walk straight ahead, over the tarmac path and past the gate on your right and follow the path up the hill. After about 1 km you will come to a gate/stile. Go through it and follow the path to the left, following the wall round School Knott Hill.
5. You will eventually come to a stile/gate. If you come to a 6 or 7 bar gate, follow the wall up the hill to the right and you?ll find the stile/gate.
6. Follow this track and eventually, after two boards over a stream, you go into open fields. You will see a white house. Walk towards this. When you get to the road, go through the gate, along the road and then take the left fork towards the house.
7. At the gate to the yard of the house, follow the public foot path sign and walk towards the telegraph pole.
8. Over the wall and then walk down the field towards the bottom left hand corner where you?ll see a style.
9. Use the direction of the yellow arrow and you will see a post in the distance. When you get to this post, follow the direction of the arrow and you will see a gate.
10. Again follow the arrow towards the small tree/bush, over the wall, and then across the field. Carry on through the gap in the wall and through the gate ahead of you and your on the road.
11. Turn left, under the railway, through the gate and at the end turn right. There you?ll find the Watermill pub.

Laurel Cottage to Wansfell & Ambleside
Time:Approx 4.5 hours to Wansfell & Ambleside
Distance:Approx 8 miles

Turn left out Laurel cottage and walk to the junction.
Turn right onto Woodland road then immediate left onto Broad street then walk to the end of the road.

Take the footpath, you will immediately see a track to the left, ignore this and continue uphill.
Follow the track until you reach a wall, turn right here and continue up the hill until you reach a gate. Go through the gate and climb to the summit of Orrest Head.
With the view of the lake in front of you look to the right and you will see a white farm, walk down the hill in that direction following the track, you will come to a signpost marked ?causeway? climb over wall and follow sign.
Keep the white farm to your left until you reach a wall with a road on the other side of it. Climb over and turn right a little further down the road is a sign beside a farm marked ?Far Orrest? , There is a gate at the rear of the farm, go through to the next corner follow the footpath over the wall and across the field to a stone wall climb over, there is a yellow marker on the other side, follow this to the large tree and go over the wall.
Keep the wall on your right and go through the next gates to the rear of the farm.
Go through the next gate and turn right down the lane to the next gate. Go over the fields following the track to the road and turn right. Approx 50 yards on the left turn left down the track. Follow this until you are the other side of the woodland. Continue along this track until there is a fork, take the left fork and follow this to the farm, go through the gate the track bends to the left follow this to the road.
Turn right and walk to the Church. Just past the church turn left onto a footpath. Follow this path until you reach a 5 bar gate don't go through this one)
Look to the right and there is a path leading to another 5 bar gate, go through this and and p the hill to the next gate.
Follow the track until you come to some properties, the track continues to the right of the property in front of you. follow this untill you reach the road.
Turn right and walk along the road until you reach ?Lane foot farm House? turn left here, there is a sign on the wall showing path to Ambleside, this is Nanny Lane. This path will take you to the top of Wansfell, About half way up follow the path marked Ambleside again, this will take you to Wansfell Pike and then continue down to Ambleside.
